The AWS Expert Wind Management System

The Expert System is designed to meet customer needs for wind products using the unique measurement capability of scanning LiDAR. Products typically include 2–D horizontal wind vector maps, vertical wind profiles, turbulence intensity statistics, and visualisation of wind turbine wake behaviour.

The system comprises four central components:

A state-of-art Scanning Doppler LiDAR module,

An advanced data post processing module,

Power supply and communication module, and

Hardened environmental shelter to allow operation in remote and challenging environments.

The EWMS offers the following advantages over current strategies used in wind energy sector:

(a) The potential to accelerate the development process or a wind farm by reducing the lead time to finance. This occurs as a result of being able to assemble the required data on wind behaviour at the development site in a shorter period than possible using current measurement practices.

(b) Reduced borrowing costs on loan funds by reducing the technical uncertainty of the Central Energy Estimates for the site. Improvement in the P95% confidence level of the estimate has the potential to deliver a significant increase in the ROI over the life of the project.

(c) Improved owner equity in the development.
